The signal from the game was sending me a warning sign to let me know that I could not watch the Yankees. I have my phone next to me and could see that the Minnesota Twins had the bases-loaded and no outs in the bottom of the second of again that the Yankees were leading want to nothing. I expected to see, at a minimum, a tie score when I hit refresh and, more likely, them trailing.
Instead, the starting pitcher, a man who is injured for almost the entire season, who only pitched three games prior to the playoffs, focused in and get the first batter on a week pop-up and strike out the next two.
You face the crossroads and didn’t buckle under. Is one of the reasons people love and hate sports. Love, because stories like this inspire. Hate because stories like this rip at your heart as a Minnesota Twins fan. After all, go into this series, Minnesota had lost 13 consecutive playoff games. This year, he was going to be different. After all, they set the major league record for home runs in a season, eclipsing the Yankees record by more than 40.
This season was going to be different, but they met a pitcher at the crossroads of the game and he willed his way through danger.
Maybe there’s a lesson for you on either side of this. Maybe you have the habit of facing the crossroads of an important moment in making excuses to yourself for why you don’t win the moment.
No matter how you approach it. Ultimately, your choice defines you.
That is certainly true at work. That is certainly true with how you deal with powerful people making decisions that affect you.
Winners find a way to win. Losers have excuses and excellent explanations.
