What ultimately makes someone choose one job candidate over others when they are all similarly qualified? There is a key word in the question that begins to help you see the differences.

What Companies Look for When Choosing a Board Member

What ultimately makes a recruiter—or it’s not a recruiter who makes the choice—what makes a hiring manager choose one candidate over another when they are all similarly qualified? I love that question and I like it because, frankly, they’re not identically qualified; they’re similar. So, what differentiates one person from another? Closer to the needs of the position, mentally, the hiring manager may have tie-breakers as to things that make them go, “Ooh, I could use that.”

Personality—you know, the connection with the person there. Now, I could go into a long diatribe about how that’s bogus because they’re on good behavior and so is the job hunter. So, you’re connecting based upon the act—you know, the personality that you’re presenting at the time—which may be a little stressed, may be a little bit more hyper because your adrenaline’s going, and they’re conning you to try and get you to be interested. Not the ideal set of circumstances, but let me continue on why they choose one person over another.

Well, hiring managers choose people because they’re competent. They demonstrate self-confidence, character, chemistry, maybe a little charisma. And here’s the key thing: ultimately, what differentiates one person from another is that the manager trusts them more. Along the way, you have to connect with a person as a person so that they trust you and believe you. Your sincerity becomes pivotal here, and thus this person may have done a better job, not just simply on the skills competence. Because, you know, we’re talking about people who are all similarly qualified, right? So, we’ve got to get to some other criteria, and that’s personality and how they engender trust. So, recognize that that’s a differentiator, and when you’re interviewing, always, always look for ways to connect with people as people.
